Can you join a restricted fund?

HIRMAA comprises sixteen restricted and regional health funds throughout Australia .  There is a very good chance that you are eligible to join one or more of these funds.

The Private Health Insurance Act prescribes certain conditions whereby prospective consumers can become contributors and obtain the benefits attached to belonging to a restricted membership health fund.

In general these conditions relate to the consumer belonging to, or having in the past belonged to, the industry or body which sponsors the restricted fund.

If you now belong to one of the general groupings we have described below or have in the past had an association with any of them you may well be eligible to join.

The restrictions applicable to each of the restricted health funds differ and as such it is impractical for this website to describe all these in detail.

You will need to contact the fund(s) directly to determine your eligibility.

Regional funds are open for all to join

In addition, three HIRMAA funds are not restricted. They are Peoplecare Health Insurance, Queensland Country Health and Westfund.
